Update as promised albeit a bit late. I'm happy to say that Duchess is, very aptly, now at home in the Duchy of Lancaster. In fact as I tap the keys I have an Akita powered foot warmer. (Based on the heat of a typical human body mass, I reckon about 175W!)

After a nightmare trip down the M6 to Brum through a 10 mile+ tailback and which cannot be described without much cursing, I picked her up last night. Volunteers Angela and Peter say Duchess travelled well and certainly for the last 100 mile slot with me she was as good as gold. Apologies now to Peter's wife who had fallen in love with Duchess but I couldn't resist her either.

We pitched back at 1045pm and she made instant friends with neighbours returning from a birthday meal. This was followed up by a full exploring session, find the toy box, a quick walk in the rain, towel down and brew and treats. Then it was get to know you better time until about 1am. She frequently wanted reassurance during the night but settled around 4am. This was expected given her past. At Oh Stupid Hundred I was pulled out of a quick nap by a cold nose, wagging tail and a big grin which caused any remaining ideas of sleep to vanish like a chocolate furnace.

Her first walk went off very well and she is good on the lead. She had a monumental sniff through the local park and we did some basic obedience and road training. She seems a quick study. An even quicker study was that sausages are to be had at the local butty shop. Likely a rod for my own back but part of her socialisation.

Tomorrow there is a visit and photo call in the local but now we have a quick shop to do and then make friends with the local horses. No problems there as our horsey friends all belong to dog owners and are used to them. And their dogs of course.

Now I just hope that as a computer Luddite and dinosaur, I've got the photos right.

That is the nose and grin that woke me yesterday at Oh Stupid Hundred and a barely more civilised hour this morning. Can't complain too much though because if I wasn't up at the time my last Akita decided upon, she would bark in my ear. At least Duchess is only a cold nose - so far. By the way the toybox contents are now strewn across the front room. Good job I'm not houseproud.
