Every quarter the Kennel Club issues numbers of each dog breed registered, which is an interesting indicator of trends about comparative popularity of the various breeds.

The striking figure that came out of the latest autumn 2011 stats is a sudden 20% drop from previous quarters in the total number of registered dogs. I'd guess that the sudden drop in public confidence over the Euro fiasco starting last summer meant far more unwanted dogs in shelters and breeders taking the deliberate decision to reduce the number of litters. Thats kind of good news if it means fewer unwanted dogs.

Akita numbers for the year are running at about 1000 animals, the same as the last three years but well down from the peak in 2004 of 1700. The trend over the last 10 years seems to have been smaller breeds being more popular and less demand for big dogs. Chihuahas, pugs, bulldogs, Lhasa Apso, cocker spaniels, schnauzers, shar peis, shitty sues, beagles and huskys have soared in popularity, less popular breeds falling in numbers include boxers, dobermans, mastiffs, rotties, Westies, German Sheperds, dalmatians and Yorkies

One thing I just learnt when I realised they were omitted from the KC statistics, they may be one of the most popular dogs in the UK, but for some bizarre political reason the 'Jack Russell' Terrier isnt recognised by the KC, although the older original 'Parsons Terrier' is. Seems JRT's are collectively known as 'Hunt Terriers', although I tend to call them something similar but with a different spelling.

They also don't recognise Utonagans, Labradoodles or Cockapoos. Presumably if all three were bred together, it would make a 'U-doo-a-poo'.

I know a gorgeous Utonagon who plays with Rube. They are a UK hybrid dog meant to look like a timber wolf, but with a nice temperament . They are a deliberate mix of husky, mamalute and GSD, Cockapoos are just Cocker Spaniel v Poodle. Both are popular. Get out more !!
