Just a quick hi.

New to the forum and a new Akita owner. We adopted Koko at 14 weeks this Sunday and had a three hour journey home where she slept with her head snuggled in my eldest son's lap. We met all three puppies who were all gorgeous but Koko was defintely the one for us. She's really affectionate and has settled right in. Met our neighbours and charmed everyone with her placid, friendly nature. Currently seems to be teething and training is going well, no accidents today (touch wood) We've done lots of reading up on the breed over the last couple of years and even more so in the weeks up to applying for adoption so it's lovely to have her home and we're ready for the road ahead. Any pearls of wisdom greatly appreciated, hoping her calm temperament will continue into adulthood?! Tried to post some pics this morning but wouldn't work so will try again later. Speak soon!

Hello and welcome you lucky, lucky puppy owner (can you detect a hint of envy in my tone ) I'm looking forward to seeing lots of pics as Koko grows up, especially those gawky looking teenage years

Some pearls of wisdom from 18 years of akita ownership have you got your furminator yet? the first cast is usually one of the worse Keep her well socialized and start puppy classes as soon as you can, do a bit of training every day and make it appear to be a game, even walks should be a training session, but she must never know that Akitas are very `wilful' and single minded, if they can do it their way they will if they don`t want do as you say they will just look at you as if you've just asked them to resite shakespear and walk away, you have to bring them back and issue the comand again until they do as they`re told

We'd love to hear how everything goes so please keep us posted

I know you'll have lots of fun being owned by an akita

Hi Melanie,
Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your time here, i'm sure you will get lots of advice.
Mine is " Run for the hills as fast as you can!!" No seriously they are great dogs, even though they are stubbourn, crafty, sly, cuddly, loyal and beautiful dogs. You will need loads of patience and even if you feel you are getting no where with the training carry on and work through it, it is a case of who gives in first with these beast

Loved reading your post Thank-you for your message and for the advice re my new owner Yes, our assessor mentioned the heavy shedding, it will be a major challenge for my Dyson so we'll have to just get poised and ready...... We've started the socialisation and will be enrolling in a nearby puppy training. Have also heard of a "puppy party" held at our local vets which sounds interesting! Will see if she fancies a trip up....

Will keep you updated

Yup, v good summary of the breed and of this little specimen! There's been loads of the loving stuff but defo hints of the other more "challenging" traits as well. The hills are too far away now so we'll have to prepare for the battle!
