Hi there, I am considering re homing a 2 yr old female Akita. I have triplets who are all 9 nearly 10 and I live opposite a large park and near a beach. I have been told that she is well socialised and good with children. She is not getting out enough due to her current owner's work schedule she is full of beans and pulls on the lead a bit. I have owned a male Standard Poodle who was quite dominant but I never had any real concerns with him. I intend to walk her a lot and do some training but I am concerned. I have no experience with the breed and I am wary! Any advice please?

Hello Emily Why are you wary of the breed? is it just lack of knowledge? if it's lack of knowledge there are some good akita breed books that you can read up on or maybe you could arrange to meet up with an akita at a rescue center?

As with all breeds each individual dog is different, but there are a few things that are specially akita A majority of akitas "don't do" recall so it's always recommended that they are kept on lead, a long retractable lead is great, they can still go for a little swim and have trot in the woods They are a stubborn breed and they're very strong, you need to do good lead training, perhaps a canny collor or simular will be good to start with. They moult usually twice a year, and when they moult they really do moult! They have a very thick undercoat and the whole of the undercoat sheds, it needs regular combing, every day for no less than half an hour and you have to be prepared for dog hairs to be shed everywhere They're very heavy and large dogs so if you're going to rescue an akita in need it would best to look for one that has been living with kiddies. Akita's are affectinate and loving, most akita's howl, my Asia doesn't but she does make grumping sounds that can be mistaken for growly noises, my old Benny did this too, Akita's can have a "wide vocabulary" they can be very vocal and you'll need to get used to the various little noises they make:) They are a loyal breed and can be very "sweet" Oh I can go on forever about them so I'd better stop now I hope you discover that you like the breed and continue to look into rescuing an akita

Hi and welcome to the forum

I totally agree with Pauline They are not the breed for everyone but once owned you rarely choose another breed.

It is important to make sure that the dog is used to children and is well behaved with them, but that goes for any breed of dog you chose to rehome.
If your dog doesn't like someone, then you probably shouldn't either !
