Hello Everyone!

I want to introduce myself, and introduce you to 'Zeeva', who I recently rehomed; she is 11 years old, a little stiff in the legs but such a joy to have around. This is my first Akita and I had no idea what to expect. I think I'm just discovering what many of you already know; that they make excellent companions, are friendly and yet independent.

I'd like to ask if there are any Akita owners who live near me, that is Shirehampton, Bristol, who might like to meet for walks? I'd like to introduce Zeeva to other dogs gradually and sensitively as she missed out on this in her early years.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I look forward to chatting with you soon. All the Best, Edward

Hello Edward, sorry to be so late in getting back to you. Zeeva is a very pretty mature lady my Asia is 12 years old and she seems to have become more sociable with age, but only since we moved to a small country town and we took introductions slowley, my husband now takes her to the pub Saturday morning, he has a coffee and she sits with a little group of her doggy friends, never off lead though, she's kept on a retractable lead all the time

AR&W have the occasional akita meet up for walks, if you go on the facebook page or at least join it (personaly I'm not a facebook person) you'll be informed when any akita meets are happening, you'll find the facebook link on the home page if you click the link above

Please keep us informed on how Zeeva gets on, I'd love to hear updates

Thank you for your sweet message. It was encouraging to read that Asia has made some doggy friends. I have tried a couple of times to introduce Zeeva to dogs while out on walks. On both occasions she went up to the dog and started licking it's face!! Both dogs recoiled slightly and she promptly bit one, and the second time, tried to bite the Husky I hoped she make friends with!
Someone I spoke with suggested that some dogs are more aggressive while on a lead when encountering other dogs off their leads? I don't know about that but I'm not quite ready for that sort of drama so will be taking things very slowly. I've told Zeeva that there will be no more kissing 'strangers'!!
Hope things are going well for you and Asia. It would be great to see a photo.
Edward

My Asia was very naughty with other dogs when we first got her, and it took a long time to socialize her, it wasn't only dogs she was naughty with it was humans too! We've always kept her on a lead, a long retractable lead does the job very well, but it has to be an extra strong one because when she "takes off" or rather when she used to "take off" she could really fly and she snapped her first retractable lead You're right to keep her on a lead, I believe it gives them a sense of security and as akita's don't "do" recall, it's never a good idea to have them off lead, you have much more control when introducing her to other dogs as well she can feel that your confident and relaxed as well my husband is much better at being relaxed with Asia around other dogs than I am, so he has done most of her doggy socializing Maybe you're right about the kising strangers thing It sounds like you're doing all the right things with your Zeeva

I'll try and remember to post a picture of my sweet Asia

Hi Edward, welcome to you and Zeeva.

What a pretty girl she is and she doesnt look 11 at all!

Youll have to ask on our Facebook group for anyone near Bristol.

Please do keep the pictures of your pretty lady coming, and thank you much for rescuing her. So many older dogs are overlooked at the time they need love the most x
If your dog doesn't like someone, then you probably shouldn't either !
