Fostering An Akita

Be the bridge between rescue and a forever home!

We are currently seeking fosterers that will welcome one of our Akitas in need into their homes.

Are you patient? Compassionate? Have breed or large breed experience?

Can you offer one of our dogs a lifeline and be the bridge between rescue and forever home?

Can you make a difference?

Benefits of Fostering

You

  • Get to make a difference
  • Get to follow that dog on the next chapter of its life having been part of its journey
  • Get the chance to rehabilitate, watch the dog flourish with the right care, dedication and love.
  • Can share your foster dog’s journey, first experiences, give regular updates in order to find a forever home.

The Dog

  • Has time to decompress in a safe home environment before they are adopted.
  • Can experience the comforts of a home life, a warm cosy bed, a garden to play in.
  • Can experience the sights, sounds & smells of life outside a kennel. Exposure to different environments and situations before they are adopted.

ARW

  • Will support your foster journey with guidance & back up.
  • Financial costs are supported, including food & veterinary care (including neutering – enabling the dog to recover in a home environment rather than kennels)

Fostering Requirements

  • House not a flat
  • Secure garden with robust 6ft fencing
  • If house is rented, written landlord’s permission must be obtained
Someone at home most if not all of the day, the dog needs to decompress and adjust to home life especially if they have been in kennels.
  • It can take 3 days for your new dog to decompress from travel, 3 weeks for them to learn your routine, and 3 months for them to truly feel at home.
  • Dependant on the particular dog, we may need pet free or adult only foster homes too.
  • Means to separate if necessary

Super Foster Dad Chris Gives an insight into why it's important to foster...

“As a dog lover and long time owner of 3 Akita’s I thought that fostering would be a wonderful way to give back to such a noble breed. My personal circumstances, however, prevented me from making a long-term commitment to a dog.

Firstly ARW worked with me to match dogs to me. After the usual home checks and suitability checks were complete I was ready to welcome my first dog.

Weeks went by, and I started to wonder if they had forgotten about me. Then, I received a call regarding a very challenging case. A beautiful girl named Beau had come into the picture; she had suffered a severe accident requiring multiple operations and transportation to several vets.
ARW were committed to not only saving her life but also saving her leg. They found only a few vets in the country would even attempt the surgery. So she came under my wing!

As the months unfolded, with expert veterinary attention, physical therapy, and the love and nurturing I provided as her foster parent, Beau regained her health.

ARW then began the process of finding her the perfect forever home. When that day finally came, I felt a mix of immense pride for being part of Beau’s journey and sadness at the thought of letting her go.

Almost all of my family and several volunteers expected me to want to keep her. Without a doubt, it was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but I knew she was going to an exceptional home.

I went on to foster at least another 12 dogs, from one night stays to months with veterinary support.

I would urge anyone considering fostering to be prepared for both laughter and tears in equal measure.
Seeing all those dogs now living fantastic lives fills me with a profound sense of pride.

However, a word of caution: remember that dogs cannot communicate their past experiences, so you’ll need to learn about their behaviors and help them develop new, positive habits.

Fostering is a commitment that may require sacrifices, but it also brings immense joy.
I am proud to have been a foster dad to so many Akitas in need.”
