Meet Bear

Meat Bear, a big heart ready for a fresh start … some dogs simply need someone to believe in them.

Bear is a handsome 4 year old long coat male whose early life was far from what any dog deserves. He spent much of it chained outside on a short lead, missing out on the love, guidance and experiences every dog should have. Thankfully, he was rescued by his current owner, who has given him the chance to experience a kinder life. Sadly, due to ill health and changing circumstances, Bear is once again searching for a forever home.

Despite his difficult start, Bear is an excitable, friendly boy with so much potential. He greets people enthusiastically and, once he’s had a few minutes to settle, his gentle side shines through. He happily takes treats, enjoys a good fuss and absolutely loves a bum scratch. He was also happy for our assessor to handle his paws, ears and mouth, showing that with trust and patience he is more than willing to cooperate.

Bear is looking for a breed experienced home with a calm, confident and assertive owner who understands the Akita breed and is prepared to go back to basics. He has missed out on much of the training and structure many dogs receive as puppies, so he will need someone willing to invest the time to help him learn, and understand rules, limitations and boundaries.

He doesn’t yet know basic commands such as sit or down, and he is strong and enthusiastic on the lead. With kind, consistent training, regular exercise and plenty of positive reinforcement, we believe Bear has every opportunity to become a wonderful companion. Loose lead walking and continuing his general training will be an important part of helping him settle into his new home.

His beautiful long coat will also need regular grooming, so his new family will need to be patient while he learns that grooming time can be an enjoyable experience.

One thing Bear would truly love is something he has never really had, a secure garden of his own. A safely enclosed garden with 6ft robust fencing will give him the opportunity to relax, play and simply enjoy being a dog.

Bear would like to be the only pet. While he can be friendly with some dogs, he is selective and may react to others. His new family will need to manage his walks carefully, continue building his confidence and help him learn to remain calm and neutral around other dogs while always advocating for him.

Dogg savvy teenagers aged 16+ – He’s a big boy, and could knock over small children.

Our assessor described Bear as a lovely dog in the home, especially considering the life he has had so far. With commitment, patience and understanding, they believe he has everything needed to become a fantastic companion.

Bear isn’t looking for perfection. He’s looking for someone willing to give him the time, guidance and stability he’s never truly had.

In return, you’ll gain the privilege of watching a dog who has already overcome so much continue to grow into the loyal, loving companion he was always meant to be.

If you have the experience, patience and dedication to help Bear write the next chapter of his story, we’d love to hear from you.
